Why is the charged amount more than the amount on my receipt?
For certain purchases, the merchant may preauthorize the purchase amount with an additional amount to cover incidental charges that may not be available at the time the transaction was concluded. When you use your Claim Card Mastercard at hotels, car rental agencies, or for similar purchases, the merchant may add up to 20% to the preauthorized amount to ensure there are sufficient funds available to cover tips or incidental expenses incurred. Restaurants may hold up to an additional 20%, and gas station purchases conducted at the pump may be preauthorized for up to $75.00. To avoid having money held when purchasing gas, you can pay at the cash register of the gas station for the exact amount of gas that you want to purchase rather than paying at the pump.
When will the preauthorized amount be available to me?
The preauthorization will place a "hold" on your available funds until the merchant sends us the final payment amount of your purchase. Once the final payment amount is received, the preauthorization amount on hold will be removed. It may take between 7-10 days for the hold to be removed for most merchants. Remember, some travel merchants, including hotels and rental cars, can place a preauthorized hold for up to 60 days. During the hold period, you will not have access to the preauthorized amount.
Why was my card declined - I know I have the funds available?
Your transaction may be declined for insufficient funds if you are making a purchase from a merchant who has a higher preauthorization amount than your purchase amount. Purchases for rentals, hotels, restaurants, and gas purchases are all subject to higher preauthorization amounts due to the possibility of other charges being incurred. The additional preauthorization amounts vary by merchant.
How do I report my Claim Card Mastercard as lost or stolen?
